CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Mal
CANON: Disney’s Descendants
HISTORY: Disney Fandom Wiki
STRENGTHS: Mal’s got smarts. Maybe not applied in the best way, but she’s quick to learn everything she sets her hand on, if she wants to. Magic? Manipulation? Thievery? Sewing? Anything she can put her mind to, and has her heart in it, she’ll succeed at. ...Provided it just requires her to be clever.
Part of how Mal succeeds at her endeavors is she’s creative. This might not have been cultivated by her mother, nor her school, but cultivating her individuality also meant she found ways to express herself that were all her’s. She also turns this to help solve problems and improvise her way through things that might have stumped her friends. ...And, on occasion, she uses this to be evil but you can’t win ‘em all.
Finally, if you can get past some of her… issues, under that Mal is rather earnest. It doesn’t show up due to certain parts of her upbringing, but under all her ‘rar I’m evil’ nonsense is someone who really just wants to be seen for who she is. And in return sees others for who they are.
FLAWS: Being daughter to, and brought up by, someone who cursed a baby over a party invitation means Mal has a bit of a vindictive streak. She’s very fond of holding grudges and revenge until she gets it out of her system. Which usually involves some degree of doing bad, bad things. Related but not worth it’s own bullet point is she can also be petty.
Mal has issues with authority, she is her own boss and anyone who tries to tell her to do things could pretty much drive her to do the opposite. She hates rules, she hates order. She’s all about freedom and expression and trying to control that might as well be trying to tell a thunderstorm to stop. Furthermore, Mal’s unlikely to turn to authority to solve problems for her, when she can handle them on her own. Even when she probably should seek out help, speaking of...
While for some self-reliance would be a strength, Mal tends to lone-wolf it. She won’t ask for help unless she’s absolutely desperate. And even then she’s just as likely to blunt force her way through it. She’s too unique, too capable, to really want to show the weakness required to ask another person for help. Unless it’s about a boy, she might ask for help there as she knows she’s hopeless on romance.
CANON ABILITIES: Mal is half-dark fairy, half human. But she retains all the general abilities of her mother, Maleficent. This means she can use magic, curse objects, curse people, brew potions, and turn into a dragon.
She’s also a graffiti artist, ruthless, cunning, capable pickpocket, and good at schemes.
AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: “Mal” (she doesn’t know what it’s short for)
AGE: 16
GRADE: Sophomore (Grade 10)
AU BACKSTORY: Mal’s mother is a dark faerie, Maleficent, one who happily cursed princesses and ruined lives in the heyday of magic and monsters, knights and dragons. That time passed, and she retired, she didn’t want to adapt to how the human world was now. But retirement is lonely if you’re a monster, eventually a human man found her, and through a bit of romance they ended up having a child.
And then Maleficent remembered who she was, now that she was going to have a baby. She cast the human out and raised the child to be a proper dark fae, ready to do all the things they were meant to do. Maleficent sorta… embraced, the concept, of being the monster in the story. She taught the child how to read and write, cast spells, form magical constructs. All the basics. And to keep the child on the proper path she kept the child’s name from her, giving her a letter for every truly evil act the child has done.
At age twelve “Mal” was something of a disappointment in that regard. Mal is, at her core, half human. ‘Her weakness’ in her mother’s eyes. She was sent to a school with some other children with like-minded parents, Dragon Hall. And Mal learned to be mean, and strong, and vindictive. But- she couldn’t quite get the right darkness to ever satisfy her mother. One of her school projects was to find someone regal and good, and curse them.
In the human world.
Instead she kinda liked the human world. And all the stuff in it, all the ways she could fit in there. So she just- ran away, and didn’t come home. Causing mayhem but not being properly evil. She’d fight hunters, because it was fun, but she never killed, or really maimed, any. Just kept them busy until she could run. And she could find a new city to cause some chaos in.
At around the age of fourteen eventually one of the hunters got close enough to talk to her, figure out what she needed. And suggest she find her way to Daybreak, to learn how to put herself to work causing chaos without interfering in humanity with quite so much… enthusiasm. So now at sixteen, she’s returning to Daybreak Academy for another boring year of classes.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Because there isn’t any barrier to lock away evil’s power, Mal is more comfortable and linked to her magics. She’s also only aimed any of her anger at how she grew up at her controlling, evil, mother. Instead of at the world itself. She also doesn’t self-identify as ‘evil’ in the same way she does in canon.
She’s a bit mellower, but she still hates rules. Part of her AU is that her genus of fae just- dislikes order on the general principal. So her desires to cause chaos are natural impulses.
Less bitter, more chaotic.
RACE: Half-Dark Faerie (Half-Human)
SECRET SOCIETY: She’s made enemies with a lot of Hunters over the past four years… it’s not her fault they’re so fun to mess with!
Otherwise non-applicable.
POWERS: Mal mostly deals in feycraft, her magics generally leaning toward fire and thorn over anything else. As those are the natural forces she has the most practice and training in. They are also the most ‘stable’ magic, due to the practice, and are less likely to run amok on her (but the odds that her spell will run wild are still noteworthy). Her potions run closer to human magic, so they are a bit more stable (and, well, targetted).
Dark-Fae are related enough to Fae godparents that she can also do some transformation of clothes/hair/appearance. That’s far more stable magic than most feycraft, although it does tend to default to Mal’s particular ‘style’ over anything else.
Her shapeshifting is more of a natural aspect of being a dark fae, than it is feycraft proper. She can turn parts of herself into a dragon. Eventually she’ll learn how to transform completely into a dragon. But for now she uses it as a way to protect herself or attack others (dragon scales to protect against swords, wings to fly (or rather not fall as fast).
HOUSING: No preference
INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT
(The following scenario is available to all characters who are apping in and is considered canon - before formal admittance into Daybreak Academy the administrative staff will give a series of questions and prompts to get a better feel for the character. Respond to the prompts in-character. Characters may lie, mark if they do with the word "lie" in parenthesis after the question answer.)
1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?
“I was told I’d get to learn how to use my powers without hunters wanting to gut me, you guys keep wasting my time with stupid human stuff.”
3. DESCRIBE YOUR IDEA OF AN IDEAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.
“Classes canceled because the science lab ‘accidentally’ caught fire.” That smirk suggests how honest the word accidentally is.
4. WHAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A SCHOOL TO OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS?
“Something worth all the trouble, you guys ask a lot of us and I’m rethinking how much I really need to be here.”
5. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MOST LIMITS YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL?
“People telling me it’d cause ‘collateral damage.’”
6. WHAT COURSE WORK EXCITES YOU? WHY?
“I do kinda like to learn more about human potions. How they make stuff work here with such limited options. And, I guess, baking isn’t the worst thing to spend time on.”
8. WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN OUTSIDE YOUR EDUCATION?
“My studies keep me too busy to do anything else.” (LIE) Mal leans back, confident in herself. She certainly doesn’t spend time defacing school and city property with graffiti.
9. WHEN GIVEN FREE TIME, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
“I do some arts and crafts, get some stuff from the thrift store for a new outfit.” She didn’t lie exactly. She just didn’t mention her arts and crafts are usually illegal, and her way to get new clothes from the thrift store is stealing.
11. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM YOUR PEERS?
“To screw up my plans.” She scoffs, “I hope they do a little better than that. But I don’t bet on it.”
12. WHEN WORKING IN A GROUP, HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE TO ACHIEVE YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL?
“I tell them what to do, and they do it. It’s the best way to go about things.” She’s not even trying to be respectful this time.
16. WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU HOPE TO HOLD AT THE END OF YOUR JOURNEY?
“What End? I’m going to go on forever. Human.” (Not sure if that’s a lie, or just egomaniac teenager.)
17. WHAT IN THE FUTURE DO YOU FEAR THE MOST?
“Nothing,” (lie) Mal leans back, looking right at her interviewer, “What would I have to fear? Hunters aren’t anything to worry about. I’m better than most monsters.”
